Palm Key Independence  Center Project

The Palm Key Independence Center -
Help us make this a reality.
PLEASE DONATE TODAY

The Independence Fund needs your help to start on the path of building “Phase 1” of an Independence Center at Palm Key, near Ridgeland, SC.   Palm Key has been the host of over  300 severely handicapped Veterans and their caregivers, demonstrating the healing powers of this tranquil and beautiful maritime woodland on the salt marshes along the Broad River.  Now we need a place of permanence.

THE VETERAN’S CHALLENGE

You’ve come home from service and things are not the same.  Adjusting to society is a tough task.  Getting back in tune with family can be overwhelming.  You may be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or you’ve been given the challenge of recovery after a critical and life-changing wound.  A head wound or loss of a limb is your reality.  You’re determined to work hard and “get back” to normalcy, after months or longer at a military or VA hospital.  You just want to be someone’s son or daughter, husband or wife, father or mother.  You want to be self-reliant.  You want to be INDEPENDENT.

OUR CHALLENGE

You’re a citizen of this great country who is in awe of our military members and veterans, and who breathes the fresh air of freedom because they go “in harm’s way” for all of our sakes.  Maybe you’re a Veteran yourself, or a parent whose son or daughter may be serving or even deployed overseas at this minute.  Our challenge … YOUR CHALLENGE …  is to provide a place where these returning Veterans can find their independence again.

WHY PALM KEY?

The rich and serene natural environment that supports this region's beauty and productivity serves as the foundation for the Independence Center's purpose in healing and supporting our nation’s severely injured Veterans and their Caregivers.

The Broad River watershed is blessed by a confluence of land, atmosphere, moving rivers and streams, all combining with a dynamic tidal estuary that is interconnected, gently mixing together as part of South Carolina's marine environment, and continuing to enrich its deep historical and cultural roots. It is an ideal place for healing and to understand and appreciate how we are all part of some place--and some thing--much larger than ourselves.

This is the place where the severely wounded truly have a chance to heal - their bodies, their minds and their spirits - and to seek a place that can help reconcile their sacrifice with their service. The marsh that fronts Palm Key is broad, dynamic, powerful, immensely productive, and clearly beautiful-- yet at the same time it is a fragile place and worthy of the highest protection of its capacity to continue to cleanse and heal. The marsh frontage, maritime forests, nature trails, fresh and brackish water ponds and lakes provide a rich place for myriad wildlife - wildlife that ebbs and flows with the changing of each tide, each day, each season. Palm Key’s setting can help each of us to better understand those things truly important in our lives.

Through this special place of intertwining environments, Palm Key and the Independence Center have kindred missions, and a life's purpose that are worthy in joining together to make a genuine difference in serving those who have served us.

Our Vision

The Independence Fund believes that for the complete physical and emotional healing of our severely injured Veterans to occur it will take the unified effort of governmental, private and corporate entities all working together towards a common purpose that is bigger than ourselves.

The Independence Fund has a 100% volunteer staff and a Board of Directors comprised entirely of combat Veterans. Our organization's administrative costs in 2013 were less than 1%, meaning more than 99% of every dollar we received went directly to a Veteran -
thanks to amazing people and communities like YOU!
